Celebrating 45 Years of Carolina Herrera
A Timeline from Fashion House to Fragrance Icon
For 45 years, Carolina Herrera has built a world around elegance with personality. Founded in New York in 1981 by Venezuelan-born Carolina Herrera, the House grew from fashion into an international name encompassing clothing, accessories, beauty and some of today's most recognizable designer fragrances – becoming another way to express the confidence, color and individuality associated with Herrera style. In celebration of the 45th anniversary of Carolina Herrera, we're looking back at the woman, the fashion and the fragrances that helped define the House.
The Beginning
Before 1981 — The Woman Behind the House
Before Carolina Herrera became a designer, she was already recognized for her personal style.
Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Herrera developed an appreciation for fashion, beauty and elegance before moving to New York in 1980. Her polished yet confident style quickly made an impression on the city's fashion and social circles.
One of the people who recognized her potential was legendary fashion editor Diana Vreeland, who encouraged Herrera to turn her instinct for style into a career in fashion.
Vreeland even gave Herrera the nickname “La Bomba,” inspired by her glamorous, energetic and unforgettable personality - a name that would resurface decades later in Carolina Herrera fragrance.
1981 — The Carolina Herrera Fashion House Is Born
Carolina Herrera presented her first collection in New York in 1981, officially beginning the fashion house that carries her name.
Herrera became known for
crisp white shirts
dramatic eveningwear
sophisticated silhouettes
and an ability to combine classic style with color, confidence and glamour.
That philosophy would remain central to the House as it expanded:
Respect tradition without being controlled by it.
The 1980s — Building a Herrera Identity
Throughout the decade, Herrera established herself in American luxury fashion through polished femininity and a sense of occasion.
Her distinctive personality became inseparable from the House, laying the foundation for fragrances that would express the same elegance, confidence, and individuality through scent.
Expanding Beyond Fashion
1988 — Carolina Herrera Enters the World of Fragrance
Seven years after launching her fashion house, Carolina Herrera introduced her first fragrance, Carolina Herrera Eau de Parfum.
It was a natural extension of the Herrera philosophy. A dress can express personality visually; a fragrance can create an impression before a word is spoken and leave a memory after someone has left the room.
This relationship between fashion and fragrance would become increasingly important to the House over the following decades.
1991 — Herrera for Men
The fragrance collection expanded with Herrera for Men, bringing the House's interpretation of elegance into men's fragrance.
Rather than abandoning the sophistication associated with Carolina Herrera, the men's collection translated it into a masculine context and helped establish the foundation for future men's colognes.
It also demonstrated that the Herrera lifestyle could extend well beyond women's fashion.
1997 — 212 Brings New York to Fragrance
Few places have influenced Carolina Herrera as much as New York City, making the arrival of the 212 fragrance collection especially significant.
Named for Manhattan's iconic 212 area code, the collection was created around an urban, youthful and cosmopolitan spirit.
212 NYC for Women
combines fresh florals with sandalwood and white musk for a clean, modern city scent
212 Men NYC
combines green freshness with aromatic and woody elements
212 captures the spirit of New York
The collection would later expand with fragrances exploring the city's nightlife, freedom, friendships, and a younger generation of city life.
2007 — CH Carolina Herrera
The introduction of CH Carolina Herrera brought another dimension to the fragrance portfolio.
The CH collection reflected the polished, cosmopolitan lifestyle associated with the fashion house while offering fragrances for both women and men.
Where 212 leaned into youthful New York energy, CH offered another expression of the Carolina Herrera lifestyle, helping broaden the fragrance house beyond a single signature.
A Star is Born
2016 — Good Girl Becomes a Modern Icon
Good Girl redefined Carolina Herrera fragrance with its celebration of modern femininity and contrasting personalities. The concept centered on the idea that a woman doesn't have to fit neatly into one definition.
She can be strong and vulnerable, sophisticated and playful, sweet and daring.
Jasmine and tuberose meet rich tonka bean, cocoa, almond, and coffee, while the iconic midnight-blue stiletto bottle transforms perfume into a fashion statement.
Good Girl demonstrated how effectively Carolina Herrera could combine its fashion heritage with fragrance:
the bottle makes the entrance, while the scent creates the memory.
2019 — Bad Boy Explores Modern Masculinity
Bad Boy introduced a masculine counterpart to Good Girl, exploring the contrast between:
Strength and sensitivity
Light and dark
Elegance and rebellion
Its striking lightning-bolt bottle reflects the collection’s bold identity.
Bad Boy reflects a recurring Herrera idea:
Personality becomes more interesting when opposites coexist and their power is celebrated.
2021 — Very Good Girl
Very Good Girl offers a fruitier interpretation of the original concept for different personalities and occasions, while continuing to celebrate the complexity and confidence of modern femininity.
Its striking red stiletto celebrates confidence and reflects Carolina Herrera’s signature love of bold color.
2023 — Good Girl Blush
Good Girl Blush revealed a softer, more romantic side of the collection. Each interpretation explores another facet of femininity, allowing the collection itself to become increasingly diverse.
Its delicate floral character and blush-pink stiletto demonstrate how the Good Girl universe continues to celebrate different expressions of femininity.
Good Girl was never intended to represent only one type of woman.
The Good Girl Collection
mirrors the idea that personal style - and fragrance - can change with mood, moment and personality.
2025 — La Bomba Brings the Story Back to Carolina Herrera
More than four decades after the fashion house began, Carolina Herrera looked back to the personality that started it all.
La Bomba takes its name from Herrera's nickname and the scent celebrates the founder's confidence, joy, glamour and ability to make an entrance. Its dramatic butterfly-inspired bottle reinforces themes of freedom, transformation and self-expression.
45 YEARS of CAROLINA HERRERA
2026 — Runway Celebration at NYFW
In 2026, Carolina Herrera celebrated its 45th anniversary by returning to New York, the city where the House began in 1981. At New York Fashion Week in September, Creative Director Wes Gordon presented the Spring 2027 collection, transforming the space with nearly 30,000 yellow tulips in a celebration of the elegance, color, optimism and femininity that have defined Herrera for more than four decades.
The anniversary also honored Carolina Herrera herself through collaborations with the Andy Warhol Foundation, featuring Warhol's portrait of Herrera, and TAFFIN, whose jewelry included a piece inspired by her signature red lipstick.
Rather than simply recreating the past, the collection reimagined Herrera signatures - bold color, florals, polished femininity, glamour, and optimism - for a new generation. The collection drew inspiration from the women and personalities connected to Herrera's early New York years while revisiting the House's signature love of getting dressed up, dramatic femininity and joyful use of color.
That same evolution can be seen in Carolina Herrera fragrances. The sophistication of the original Carolina Herrera perfumes has expanded into the urban energy of 212, the contrasting femininity of Good Girl, the modern masculinity of Bad Boy, and the joyful self-expression of La Bomba.
Forty-five years after Carolina Herrera first entered New York fashion, the anniversary show celebrated not only how far the House has come, but how the founder's distinctive style and personality continue to inspire its future.
